Fibreglass swimming pools was made famous by Penguin Pools in South Africa.

Many consumers however have the perception that an interior fibreglass finish could only be achieved with a pre-manufactured pool shell - THIS IS NOT TRUE.  Fibreglass linings are installed in concrete pools as well. Swemgat do not recommend pre-moulded pool shells due to poor after-sales-support from local manufacturers, and suggest that you accept the bit higher cost of a concrete pool.

Major benefits of fibreglass linings:

  • Stain resistance:  Non-porous fibreglass surfaces resists stains, but if stains however occur due to a chemical imbalance of the water (Total Alkalinity, pH, Hardness) removal thereof are easy.
  • Compatibility with all pool water treatment systems: Any standard or non-standard swimming pool water treatment systems works well with fibreglass linings, including chlorine; saltwater chlorination; ozonination and fresh water systems.
  • Easier pool cleaning due to the smooth surface which makes the removal of algae easier.

Major disadvantages of fibreglass linings:

  • A limited colour range of 3 standard colours are recommended (white, poolblue, white). Other colours could be specially mixed, but fading of these non-standard colours may occur.
  • Risk of swimmers slipping. Request a non-slip surface on steps to overcome this risk.
  • Multi-layer delamination is the most common problem which occurs when fibreglass layers move away from each other. Experienced pool builders following well defined quality control procedures have reduced the occurence of this potential problem to less than 1.5% of production volume.
